The Leadership of SPLM-IO

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army – In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) remains a central force in South Sudan’s struggle for democracy, federalism, and peace. Despite the regime’s efforts to fragment and weaken the movement, SPLM-IO continues to demonstrate resilience, unity of purpose, and growing international legitimacy.

Leadership Under Acting Chairman Rt. Hon. Oyet Nathaniel Pierino

With Dr. Riek Machar now facing a politically motivated trial in Juba, the SPLM-IO leadership has passed into the hands of Acting Chairman Hon. Oyet Nathaniel Pierino. A seasoned politician and advocate for federalism, Oyet has provided consistent leadership at critical moments. His stewardship underscores the movement’s institutional depth: SPLM-IO is not dependent on one leader, but rooted in structures, principles, and a collective vision for South Sudan.

Regime Attempts at Manipulation

President Salva Kiir has attempted to create confusion by fostering self-proclaimed “SPLM-IO” elements inside Juba—puppet structures designed to mimic legitimacy while serving the regime’s agenda. These actors, however, have little credibility among South Sudanese communities or the international arena. Their existence highlights the regime’s fear of SPLM-IO’s influence and its resort to deception rather than dialogue.

Dr. Machar’s referral to Kiir’s kangaroo court epitomizes this manipulation. The spectacle of a trial, orchestrated to provide the appearance of legality, is a travesty of justice that aims to silence the legitimate voice of opposition. Yet, far from weakening SPLM-IO, it has strengthened the movement’s resolve and global solidarity.

Expanding Alliances with Opposition Groups

SPLM-IO has deepened its engagement with opposition partners across South Sudan. Recognizing that no single group can challenge authoritarianism alone, the movement has actively built coalitions with organizations advocating for democratic reform, human rights, and genuine federal governance. This strategic expansion of alliances demonstrates SPLM-IO’s commitment to inclusivity and to a collective national project beyond tribal or factional lines.

A Global Movement Growing Stronger

Equally important has been the global expansion of SPLM-IO. From Europe to North America, from Australia to the wider African diaspora, the movement is gaining momentum. Offices, representatives, and advocacy networks are now well established across these regions, ensuring that the voices of South Sudanese in exile are heard.

This international reach strengthens SPLM-IO’s diplomatic capacity, enabling it to engage policymakers, human rights institutions, and civil society partners worldwide. It also ensures that the truth about South Sudan’s struggle is not silenced by the regime’s propaganda, but amplified through respected channels across continents.

Stronger by the Day

The combination of resilient leadership under Oyet Nathaniel, the unjust persecution of Dr. Machar, strengthened opposition alliances, and an expanding global network has positioned SPLM-IO as stronger by the day.

The regime’s attempts to divide and silence have failed. Instead, SPLM-IO’s leadership embodies both continuity and adaptability, ensuring that the struggle for federalism, democracy, and justice in South Sudan remains alive, vibrant, and irreversible.

SPLM-IO: Building Hope Amid Kiir’s Failure

Like a hydra, President Salva Kiir and his security apparatus—the NSS and other terror forces—have tried frantically to strike at the leadership of the SPLM-IO. Vast sums are spent in his political marketplace, buying loyalty, sowing division, and attempting to weaken the movement. Yet these efforts achieve nothing. People take his money and continue as before—committed to the cause of change and building the movement that will one day replace Kiir and his catastrophically failed government.

History will record how the world’s youngest nation, born in 2011 with extraordinary hope, fell into despair within a single decade. South Sudan now sits at or near the bottom of every international ranking—literacy, child mortality, infrastructure, GDP, debt burden, human development index. In every category, the state has collapsed. The promise of independence has been squandered by leaders who chose corruption, violence, and authoritarianism over service to their people.

The reality today is clear: Kiir presides over a circus where clowns masquerade as ministers and politicians. The puppet master long ago lost the plot, yet insists on maintaining a stage where the South Sudanese people are forced to play the role of victims. The cost is measured not only in numbers, but in the daily suffering of ordinary citizens denied dignity, justice, and opportunity.

And yet, the people have not surrendered hope. Across the country and in the diaspora, South Sudanese recognize that SPLM-IO is charting a different path. A path of unity, federalism, democracy, and accountability. A path that brings together the voices of the 64 nations of South Sudan, not as subjects to a regime, but as citizens of a federal, just, and prosperous republic.

The regime’s strategy of repression and bribery cannot extinguish this aspiration. Every attempt to weaken SPLM-IO only proves the strength of the movement’s vision and the resilience of its supporters.

The future belongs not to a failed system of patronage and fear, but to a people determined to reclaim their destiny. SPLM-IO stands ready to lead South Sudan toward that future.

Viva SPLM-IO. Viva the people of South Sudan.
